How to Get Rid of Garlic Smell

Garlic is easy to grow and can be grown year-round in mild climates. In cold climates, cloves can be planted in the ground about six weeks before the soil freezes, and harvested in late spring. Garlic plants are not attacked by pests. They instead suffer from pink root, a disease that stunts the roots and turns them pink or red. Garlic plants can be grown close together, leaving enough room for the bulbs to mature, and are easily grown in containers of sufficient depth.

A large number of sulfur compounds contribute to the smell and taste of garlic. Diallyl disulfide is believed to be an important odor component. Allicin has been found to be the compound most responsible for the “hot” sensation of raw garlic. This chemical opens thermo TRP (transient receptor potential) channels that are responsible for the burning sense of heat in foods. The process of cooking garlic removes allicin, thus mellowing its spiciness. Due to its strong odor, garlic is sometimes called the “stinking rose.”

Garlic Smell Removal

* What works for onions works for garlic as well. An easy way to remove these smells from your hands is to soap them up and rub them along a stainless steel faucet or knife. It really does work but it must be stainless steel that you’re rubbing, and not any other metal.

How does it work exactly? It’s not really an exact science, but the theory says that the sulfur from the onion/garlic/fish would be attracted to and bind with one or more of the metals in stainless steel.

As such, it’s a win-win situation for the steel (which becomes even more stainless through sulfuric intervention) and your hands (which will become odorless once sulfur binds with the steel). Once the sulfur compounds bind to the steel, then the odor is removed from your fingers.

* Don’t have stainless steel utensils on hand? Squeeze the juice of lemons into a bowl. Dip your hands in the liquid concentrate for 3 minutes, then rinse off. Your hands will smell like fresh lemons instead of garlic!

* Remove garlic smell from a wooden cutting board by covering it with a thick paste made of sodium bicarbonate and a little warm water. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes and then rinse. Baking soda is also good for deodorizing garlic-scented hands, along with a little salt and water.

* Noxzema is another product that’s effective at removing unwanted garlic scent on your hands and body. It’s a skin cleanser marketed by Procter & Gamble that contains camphor, menthol and eucalyptus, among other ingredients.

Originally developed as a sunburn remedy, it is also effective as a cure for garlic odors because of its list of odor-fighting, fragrant and medicinal ingredients.

* Get a Prozone Air Purifier; it’s good for keeping your whole house smelling fresh. Eliminate musty basement smell or cooking smells – garlic smells in particular- from your home by using this highly effective device. Unfortunately, there’s a catch to this product’s potency; it’s quite expensive.

* If you want something a little cheaper, you can try Ozium Air Freshener; it’s just a small bottle of deodorizer, but just a little goes a long way. You can get this product at most Wal-Mart branches and some car part dealerships.

Garlic Breath Removal

When eaten in quantity, garlic may be strongly evident in the garlic consumer’s sweat and breath the following day. This is because garlic’s strong-smelling sulfur compounds are metabolized, forming allyl methyl sulfide. Allyl methyl sulfide (AMS) cannot be digested and is passed into the blood. It is carried to the lungs and the skin, where it is excreted. Since digestion takes several hours, and the release of AMS several hours more, the effect of eating garlic may be present for a long time.

* This well-known phenomenon of “garlic breath” is alleged to be alleviated by eating fresh parsley. The herb is, therefore, included in many garlic recipes, such as Pistou, Persillade and the garlic butter spread used in garlic bread.

Since the smell results mainly from digestive processes placing compounds such as AMS in the blood, and AMS is released through the lungs over many hours, eating parsley provides only a temporary masking.

One way of accelerating the release of AMS from the body is the use of a sauna or through any other exercise that makes you sweat and release your bodily toxins.

* The only guaranteed way to prevent garlic breath is simply not to eat garlic; it’s a very effective method.

* Germ-induced garlic breath can be reduced by usual oral hygiene methods. Standard stinky breath solutions include regular use of mouthwash, as well as brushing and flossing teeth after every meal.

* There are also commercial bad breath medicines available that are more powerful than the usual mouthwashes you can buy in shops. These are available from your doctor, your pharmacist or the Internet.

* Some people also claim that chewing cardamom seeds has a similar effect to parsley and can work as a garlic breath remedy. Cardamom has a very strong flavor, so this might not be an option for some people.

* Knobexol is the perfect agent against garlic, alcohol and cigarette smell. This special, patented herb mix neutralizes the “smell” agent of garlic in your body. This is the determining difference to the common agents that only cover the smell.

It prevents garlic smell in your breath and from your skin. The active substances of the garlic are neutralized by a special herb mix (and are not just covered or masked by stronger, more pleasant smells!). The problem with garlic odor after a good dinner will be perfectly resolved with this phenomenal product.
